Program Criteria

Dental Hygiene Technology Minimum Admission Criteria

1. Confirmed admission to the University of Cincinnati is required.

2. Biology: One year of high school biology with lab and a grade of C or higher completed within 6 years of this application or a college biology course(s) as indicated below is/are required.

If high school biology grade was a C or higher, but was taken longer than 6 years prior to this application, the student must complete Biology for the Health Professions and Technical Programs I (BIOL1051C) with a grade of C or better.

If high school biology was not taken or if the student earned below a grade of C, the student must complete both the Biology for the Health Professions and Technical Programs I and II (BIOL1051C and BIOL1052C) with grades of C or better.

3. Chemistry: One year of high school chemistry with lab and a grade of C or higher completed within 6 years of this application OR CHEM1030 (General, Organic, and Biochemistry) and 1030L(Gen/Org/Biochemistry Lab) with grades of C or better.

If high school Chemistry grade was a C but was taken longer than 6 years prior to application, the student must complete General, Organic, and Biochemistry (CHEM 1030 and CHEM 1030L) with grade of “C” or better.

If high school Chemistry was not taken or if the student earned a grade below C, the student must complete General, Organic, and Biochemistry (CHEM 1030 and CHEM 1030L) with grade of “C” or better.

4. Math: Students may meet the math prerequisite requirement via any one of the following paths (you do not have to complete all three):

Math Placement Test, ACT Math-Sub Score, or SAT Math-Sub Score for placement into STAT 1031 or higher.
Completion of preparatory math course(s) needed for college-level MATH/STAT course.
Completion of college-level MATH/STAT course.

5. English: Eligibility for English Composition (ENGL1001) is required. You can view the eligibility criteria here.

6. Minimum GPA: Students must meet the requirement of an un-weighted high school GPA of 3.2 or higher OR a 3.0 GPA in college courses with a minimum of 12 credit hours completed.

7. English Proficiency: Students who have not graduated from a U.S. or English speaking high school must complete the TOEFL examination or other exam with the designated score, as listed here.

Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary Minimum Admission Criteria

1. Must be a University of Cincinnati student.
2. Advanced qualified personnel (AQP), unlicensed dentists, dental students. Unaccredited foreign dental college graduate, Dental Assistants*, RDHs and unlicensed dental hygienists.
*Dental Assistants must also have two years of experience in chair side dentistry within the past 5 years.
3. Sponsor (Dentist) include a commitment to provide 80 hours of direct supervisions on patients within their practice.

Nursing, RN Technology Minimum Admission Criteria

1. Confirmed admission to the University of Cincinnati is required.

2. Biology: One year of high school biology with lab and a grade of C or higher completed within 6 years of this application or a college biology course(s) as indicated below is required.

College Anatomy & Physiology I (BIOL2001C) completed with a grade of C or better within the 6 years prior to application will also meet this biology requirement.

3. Chemistry: One year of high school chemistry with lab and a grade of C or higher completed within 6 years of this application OR CHEM1030 (General, Organic, and Biochemistry I) and 1030L (Gen/Org Biochemistry Lab) with grades of C or better is required.

4. Math: Students may meet the math prerequisite requirement via any one of the following paths (you do not have to complete all three):

Respiratory Care Minimum Admission Criteria

1. Earned High School diploma or GED
2. Completed high school or college-level Biology with a grade of C or better
3. 2.75 overall GPA from the most recent qualifying institution (at least 12 credit hours)
4. Test into college-level reading, writing, and algebra or statistics (as determined by the placement test)

A GPA of 2.75 or better must be maintained for all courses, with a minimum of C in science courses. This requirement is also enforced for any credit transferred into the VT program from another college.
A minimum of twenty (20) hours of veterinary-related experience, under the direction of a veterinarian or registered veterinary technician, must be completed. A veterinary experience document which must be signed by the student’s supervisor may be obtained from the academic advisor through a link on the website.

Dental Hygiene Technology Reflective Essay

Instructions:
A reflective essay must be submitted as a Word document along with the electronic dental hygiene application. This essay is an opportunity for you to reflect on your experiences in life and let us know how those experiences have led you to the dental hygiene profession as well as how you have developed as a person because of those experiences. You will need to answer the following questions based on if this is your first or second time applying. The essay should address the following four questions and should be no longer than 750 words (no more than 3 pages). Those applying for a second time will need to answer the additional question and your essay should be no longer than 850 words (no more than 3.5 pages).

Formatting Instructions:
Your essay should be on a word document in either Calibri, Cambria or Times New Roman font, size 12-point font, double spaced with one-inch margins on all sides. Your text should be aligned to the left only and should not include any bold, italicized, or underlining.

Questions for FIRST Time Applicants:

Describe three experiences that led you to the dental hygiene profession?
What do you do when you encounter obstacles on your path to success? Please give a specific example.

Office Observation Visits

Applicants are required to visit 2 dental offices for 8 hours (minimum 4 hours each) for the purpose of observing behind-the-scenes operations and the role of the dental hygienist in that office. The Pre-Admission Observation/Work Experience Form must be submitted along with the electronic Dental Hygiene Application.

Veterinary Technology Reflective Essay

A reflective essay must be submitted as a Word document along with the electronic veterinary technology application and must be a minimum of 300 words to a maximum of 900 words. Use Calibri or Times New Roman, size 12 regular font (not italicized or bold, no underlining), double spaced. For each of these statements, write a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words:

Describe in detail at least two ways, excluding coursework, that you have investigated the veterinary technology profession as a career choice.
Identify at least two intrinsic character traits that you possess. Describe how they have helped you succeed and/or overcome challenges in your life and explain how they will lead to your success in the Veterinary Technology program and the field of veterinary medicine.
The Veterinary Technology program at UC Blue Ash is a big commitment, like a job. Describe how you plan to prioritize school, work, and any other commitments you may have in order to maintain a healthy balance in your life.

Veterinary Clinic Experience

Applicants are required to complete a minimum of twenty (20) hours of veterinary-related experience, under the direction of a veterinarian or registered veterinary technician. More volunteer experience as well as paid experience is of benefit to the student. The Experience Document, signed by the student's DVM or RVT supervisor(s) must be submitted along with the electronic veterinary technology application.

Health Care Experience Form

Credit toward the selective admissions process will be awarded to those applicants with employment, volunteer or extensive observation in a human medical setting (i.e. hospital, physician's office, nursing home, hospice, outpatient clinic, rehabilitation center, etc) equating to at least 20 hours. The Health Care Experience Form can be submitted along with the electronic Radiologic Technology application as an optional component to the application.

All admitted students are required to attend a mandatory program orientation on Saturday, June 8, 2024 from 9AM - 12PM. Failure to attend this mandatory on campus orientation may result in the student forfeiting their seat in the Radiologic Imaging Technology program.
